To reconsider the concept of the gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, and its relevance in contemporary architecture and design. In the 21st century, the philosophy of the total work of art can serve as a valuable source of inspiration for architects and designers who seek to create cohesive and harmonious projects that integrate multiple art forms. However, the current state of architecture education often focuses solely on technical aspects of building, without adequately incorporating inspiration from other art forms such as fashion, drama, and theatre.
To explore the historical evolution of the total work of art concept and its application to contemporary architecture and design. The analysis the current state of architecture education across various universities and schools of architecture in different countries to identify gaps in the curriculum that prevent the incorporation of the total work of art philosophy. Through analyzing successful examples of total works of art, both historical and contemporary, the thesis will propose a new approach to architecture and design that incorporates interdisciplinary collaboration and inspiration from a range of art forms to create cohesive and harmonious projects.
To promote a more holistic and innovative approach to architecture and design that goes beyond technical aspects and encompasses a wide range of artistic inspiration and blur the boundaries between different design disciplines.
